Marriage should be open to all who want it

As I see it, marriage equality is good and right for Maine. Opponents' letters warn of a so-called "homosexual agenda." I see no such threat.

Instead, I see people, like so many others, doing what they can to get by, make a living, find love and share a life together.

What we call "traditional marriage" is not now nor has it ever been everyone's experience.

In fact, historically, marriage for love instead of as a contract for money or position was rare.

At one time, one spouse legally owned another and different races could not intermarry.

Today, as my wife and I raise a girl in Portland my daughter goes to school, plays soccer and takes dance lessons with kids who have a mom and a dad, and others with two moms, two dads or other arrangements.

According to the Census, a quarter of all households with children are headed by single parents.

Regardless, these are the families that make up our neighborhood and community.

In Maine today, if two adults want to declare their commitment and marry, why deny some that right?

As a rule, everyone should have the same rights and protections.

Maine is a state with a tradition of tolerance and respect for our neighbors. Please support equality and vote "no" on Question 1.
