Rep. Emily Cain corrects Bob Emrich

Posted by: Dorian Cole -- Wednesday, September 16, 2009

As the campaign heats up and our opposition continues to mislead Maine voters, help from our allies in dispelling those lies is invaluable. In today's Bangor Daily, Representative Emily Cain, D-Orono, wrote a rebuttal to Bob Emrich's September 2nd column, Same-sex marriage would be harmful to society.  In Rep. Cain's column, she agrees with Bob Emrich on one point, that the vote on Question 1 on November 3rd will be one of the most important Mainers ever cast.

If you missed Bob Emrich's piece, reading Rep. Cain's column is a great overview of what he said. Plus hers is infused with truth, fairness and Maine values.  She clarifies how marriage equality will make families stronger by acknowledging commitments under the law, therefore recognizing them as a legal pair, allowing them to file taxes jointly, giving them access to health care insurance as a family or inherit property when one partner dies without the hardship of crushing taxes.

In the argument of strengthening families, she points out that every reputable children's advocacy organization agrees that love and support are what children need most. The American Academy of Pediatrics testified that It is the quality of parenting that predicts children's psychological and social adjustment, not the parent's sexual orientation or gender. We know that all Maine people love their children. And Maine people know that all Maine people love their children. That being said, why would we deprive those children the same protections under the law that children of straight couples receive everyday?

Rep. Cain closes her argument with the faith that fair-minded Mainers will choose to uphold our long-standing traditions of live and let live, of fairness for all and of the right of every Mainer to marry the person they love. I am confident that they will vote No on 1 to protect Maine equality. I hope she's right and we're working hard every day to see to it!
